A recent study suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
