Lifetime of Income Insufficient for UK Workers to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Report Says

According to new analysis, the median employee in the UK would require over five decades of salary to attain the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Growing Economic Disparity Across Decades

This research analyzed net worth information from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required 38 years of median full-time earnings to enter the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead involved with the report stated: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would still not be able to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Measuring the Economic Gap

The analysis discovered that the difference between the assets of the median citizen and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The economist further stated: "These gaps are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life well-off tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide growing in specific figures, the percentage of total wealth in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – called "proportional economic disparity" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s era," per the research.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "passive" gains, through increasing property values and variations in superannuation evaluations, were the primary factors of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, per the report.

These increases typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Wealth Disparities

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in actual value, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Regional Differences

There were also pronounced area-based disparities, with the median value of wealth in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate numerous families were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes fared much better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
