Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
