Advocacy Group Claims to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Tracks from the Streaming Giant

An activist organization has stated to have harvested a vast number of tracks from Spotify and is getting ready to publish them publicly.

Potential Boost for AI Development

Observers noted the apparent leak could boost AI companies looking for data to train their technology.

An entity called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as artist and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million songs, confirmed that the breach did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have located and deactivated the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” said a company spokesperson.

The Swedish company, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorised access found a third party scraped public metadata and used illicit tactics to circumvent DRM [digital rights management].

Group's Stated Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not believe the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

Model Development and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ copyright, said the leaked music would probably be used for developing AI models.

“Training on illegally sourced data is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is almost certain to end up training AI models,” he said.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to LibGen, a huge online archive of pirated books that has allegedly been used by Meta to develop its AI models.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on the professional network that individuals of the public could in principle “build their own personal free equivalent of Spotify”. He said it could also allow technology firms to “educate models on contemporary music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a battleground between artists, authors and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Policy Considerations and Responses

Across Britain, creative professionals have protested against a government proposal to let AI companies utilize protected work without consent unless the owner opts out. Virtually every respondent to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ apprehensions.

A government minister for technology, research and technology told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the matter, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The government has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
